A long time ago, when life as we know was nothing but dreams of the builders of the universe. There were two forces, in the form of serpents that represented our duality, one called Treng treng, which controlled positive forces and lived on earth in complete harmony with terrestrial beings. There was also Kai Kai, who lived in the depths of the waters, in turn controlled the deep and negative energies.
So the Mapuche life was such until the day when kai kai awoke and began to move the waters with great force, and it began to rise, in a very short time all the fields began to fill with water and all the land where the water was developed. life was flooded. People quickly began to climb the mountains and higher hills, joined machi, longko, kimche and many people from all sides to go in search of Treng treng.
Treng treng saw the land without trees, without people, and all full of water, immediately ordered the oldest people to begin to climb the mountains and thus began to make the mountains rise towards the sky and together with them Kai Kai The water level continued to rise.
Many people who did not reach the hills were hit by water and drowned while some became fish, algae and marine animals of different kinds. Those elders who escaped from the water and could not run, were turned into fast land animals, those that climbed quickly through the mountains.
So there was a great battle. Kai kai ascended the waters, Treng treng raised the hills. At noon the hills had already reached great height reaching almost to the sky, then people began to burn from the heat some died and the bodies were carried by the wind, so the clouds formed. Other children and grandparents were turned into birds, there were people who were bald because of the heat, until today their grandchildren are bald at birth, others are burned skin and say grandparents that is why there are people darker than other. As the days passed and the fight did not stop, a lot of people gathered to figure out what they could do. After a meeting, one of the machi had a dream, in which she was informed that they had to make a sacrifice. Before the big star was lost in the skies, so the next day, they chose a small boy, this one was sacrificed and his heart offered to Kai kai. After being thrown into the water, the calmness of the sea returned and with the passing of days the water level dropped.
In the same way only very few people were saved, among them four people, the four great sages, one of them fücha, the elder, kuche, the old woman, üllcha, the young woman and weche, the young man: fücha and kuche: they remained ülcha and weche: they were left for their children and the children of their children who are now the grandparents of our grandparents: to settle this one that is their land.
Kai kai and Treng treng, they returned to their caves, the water receded and the people returned to populate the earth. The Mapuche women told stories of young women and children who came to the water and forests to talk with the animals that had once been their descendants. Some returned and others did not return, thus giving rise to the formation of new stories about hidden underwater worlds where those people who did not return are living. These histories explain the origin of the surnames, and the formation of the ngen: owners of the land, of the plants, of the water, and the Mapuche lineages
